identi.ca
I've created an identi.ca account. My username is jkakar. I'm not
sure I'll actually use it, as this is my first time trying
microblogging of any kind. I often have ideas I think I should post
about and end up not doing so because writing well tends to take
more time than I think I have. Maybe identi.ca will be light-weight
enough that I'll actually use it.

One of the obvious things I could do instead of posting more things
here is write on my Facebook wall or update my status, but I
generally find Facebook very boring to use. I'm not interested in
logging in a hundred times a day to see if anything has changed and
I also don't want to be bombarded by notification emails with
nothing in them but a link that invites me to login to Facebook.

From what I can tell, identi.ca is more about real-time
conversations than random status updates. There does seem to be a
lot of useless "Bob is just about to go to bed" tweets, but
hopefully subscription will make it possible to filter out people
that don't actually have anything interesting to say. I'm also
attracted to the fact that it's integrated with Jabber, which means
I can use the chat tools I'm familiar with to interact with it.

We'll see how it goes!

How does it compare to twitter?

I don't know because I've never used Twitter. The reason I've
chosen identi.ca instead of Twitter is because (a) most of the nerdy
types I know who are using this kind of thing are on it and (b) it's
open source.

identi.ca is written using free software (AGPL), run by a guy in Montreal (the one who started and then sold wikitravel), and is intended to be federated rather than centrally controlled.

i guess if a lot of people you know are using it, it might be pretty cool. social networking sites etc. only seem to work if everyone gets on the bandwagon. otherwise they're just useful tools that become useless.

That's certainly a big factor, but I think part of it for me is
workflow oriented. I don't use Facebook because I find it
cumbersome, despite the fact that everyone I know is fairly active
there.

You should join identi.ca! :)

I use push.fm to update my various social networking sites. So that way I do it from an IM window and it just pushes automatically to Jaiku, Identi.ca, and Facebook. You might want to look it up and you can catch multiple social groups.

I log into the fb web interface now only every couple of days to check status updates from friends. I rarely post anything directly in there as the UI annoys me too much.

I suspect once identi.ca or someone gets their federation model worked out, push.fm will go away. But in the meantime, it lets me sidestep the social networking trend a bit.
